Principal’s Address - Welcome Back to Term 2

Kia ora koutou parents / whanau

Welcome back to Term 2 at Whangarei Primary School. Traditionally, this is a term with less extra-curricular activities and interruptions, and so the teachers and tamariki are focusing on consolidating new learning. There will be an opportunity at the end of this term to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and achievement levels - these will be in Week 9 on Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 June, and you will be given more details about how to book these appointments nearer the time.

We had a very successful and enjoyable introductory Parents, Teachers Association meeting at the end of last term, which was well attended. The main outcome from that meeting was a consensus that connections between the parent / whanau body and the school was the focus, and that any fundraising initiatives would be a bonus. With that in mind, we are intending to hold another P.T.A. meeting at the start of this term on Tuesday 21 May at 5.30 p.m. in the staffroom.  At this meeting we will be looking to appoint some formal positions of responsibility for the P.T.A. - a Chairperson, a Secretary and a Treasurer. If you are interested in taking on one of these positions of responsibility, please could you email me at principal@whangareiprimary.school.nz and then we will conduct a secret ballot at the meeting to appoint these positions. The main focus for this meeting will be to decide upon and begin planning for an event in Term 3 where the Whangarei Primary School community can connect with each other.

Finally, we had a fabulous whole school powhiri this morning to welcome all our new students and whanau to our kura. As always, I was extremely proud of all our tamariki, who all behaved respectfully and sang the waiata beautifully, but especially our boys on the kai-korero who said their mihi confidently and the girls on the kai-karanga who led our manuhiri into the powhiri so wonderfully. Our powhiri and assemblies really are a mark of how exceptional a school we are at Whangarei Primary.

On Thursday 2 May, this week, at 10.00 a.m. we will be holding our ANZAC Ceremony at school. You are warmly invited to attend this ceremony, but if you are unable to attend you will still have the opportunity to watch it on Livestream through our school facebook page. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Nga mihi
